Daily Itinerary for Bhutan Butterfly Tour (9 Days)

Day 1: Arrival in Paro and Transfer to Thimphu
Upon your arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be greeted by your guide and driver. From Paro, you'll embark on a scenic drive to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, which takes about 1.5 hours. Once in Thimphu, you'll visit the National Memorial Chorten, a stupa built in memory of the third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, and then proceed to see the towering Buddha Dordenma statue, which offers panoramic views of the valley. In the evening, take a leisurely stroll through Thimphu's local markets and crafts bazaar. Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 2: Thimphu to Punakha
After breakfast, you will drive to Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan. The journey takes you through picturesque landscapes, leading to Punakha, which served as the capital until 1952. Upon arrival, you will visit the Punakha Dzong, an architectural masterpiece located at the confluence of two rivers. This dzong played a central role in Bhutan’s history, both politically and religiously, and is renowned for its stunning structure and beautiful setting.

Day 3: Punakha to Trongsa
Today, you will drive to Trongsa, located in central Bhutan. The journey takes you through diverse landscapes, showcasing Bhutan’s natural beauty. In Trongsa, you will visit the Trongsa Dzong, a formidable fortress that has been a crucial administrative and religious center for centuries. The dzong offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley and is an excellent place to learn about the region’s history. You will spend the night in Trongsa.

Day 4: Trongsa to Tongtongphai
After breakfast, you will drive to Tongtongphai, a prime location for butterfly watching. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch at Yurmung, and then begin your butterfly-watching adventure. Tongtongphai’s diverse habitats make it a great place to observe various butterfly species. You will spend the afternoon searching for butterflies and documenting your findings. Camp overnight in Tongtongphai, enjoying the natural surroundings.

Day 5: Butterfly Watching in Tongtongphai
Today is dedicated to exploring the butterfly-rich environment of Tongtongphai. Spend the entire day observing and photographing butterflies in the area’s lush habitats. The serene setting provides an ideal backdrop for butterfly watching, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Bhutan. Enjoy a full day of butterfly exploration and camp overnight in Tongtongphai.

Day 6: Tongtongphai to Pangzur
After a hearty breakfast, drive to Pangzur, another excellent location for butterfly watching. The journey takes you through stunning landscapes, leading to Pangzur’s diverse ecosystems. Spend the day exploring the area and searching for butterflies. The rich variety of habitats in Pangzur offers ample opportunities for spotting different species. Camp overnight in Pangzur, continuing your butterfly-watching experience.

Day 7: Pangzur to Punakha
Drive back to Punakha, with a lunch stop at Chendebji. Upon arrival in Punakha, if time allows, visit the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan. This bridge connects several villages with Punakha Dzong and offers a unique perspective on the area’s geography. You will stay overnight in a hotel in Punakha, enjoying the comforts of modern amenities.

Day 8: Punakha Sightseeing – Return to Thimphu
In the morning, explore Punakha Dzong and Chimi Lhakhang, a pilgrimage site dedicated to the Divine Madman. After sightseeing, drive back to Thimphu. In Thimphu, visit the Textile Museum and the 13th Arts and Crafts School, where you can watch a live performance by students showcasing traditional Bhutanese arts and crafts. Overnight at a hotel in Thimphu.

Day 9: Thimphu to Paro Airport – Departure
On your final day, you will drive to Paro Airport for your departure. After breakfast, take the drive back to Paro, concluding your butterfly-watching tour in Bhutan. Reflect on the memorable experiences and unique wildlife encounters as you prepare for your journey home.
